Voice Over Internet Protocol - VOIP Services

What is VOIP?

VOIP is a method of delivering a phone service over the Internet rather than via traditional phone lines.

Why use VOIP?

Lower Cost
Increased Functionality
Easy Disaster Recovery
Easy Upgrade Path

Lower Cost

In general phone services using VOIP cost much less than the equivalent services from traditional suppliers (e.g. BT).

One of the biggest savings is in line rental.

For example: where a company that rents 4 lines pays 4 lots of line rental as well as high call charges, a VOIP system with 4 lines only requires the rental of 1 broadband internet connection and has greatly reduced call charges.

The greatly reduced call charges are particularly significant on international calls. These can often be as cheap as a local call, or even FREE if your called party is also a VOIP user.

The initial cost of a VOIP pbx (office “switchboard”) is usually cheaper than the equivalent hardwired pbx used by traditional services.

Increased Functionality

VOIP makes easy some things that are difficult or impossible to do with traditional phone networks.

Incoming phone calls are automatically routed to your VOIP phone where ever you plug it into the network. Take your VOIP phone with you on a trip, and anywhere you connect it to the Internet, you can make & receive your calls.

Your phone can be your laptop, PDA, desktop computer, etc.

Call centre agents using VOIP phones can easily work from anywhere with a good Internet connection.

VOIP can be integrated into computer applications (e.g. MS Outlook) to make the implementation of systems like contact management and intelligent voice response (IVR) easy.

Easy Disaster Recovery

Because VOIP is almost infinitely flexible it is relatively easy to relocate your office phone system to another site should a disaster render your existing location unusable.

All you require is a good internet connection and the ability to restore you existing software setup to new readily-available equipment.

It’s usually relatively straight forward to distribute the same system across workers’ homes as long as they have good internet connectivity.

Easy Upgrade Path

With traditional phone system pbx’s when your company grows beyond the installed capacity you need to purchase at best a new card to fit inside the pbx or worse a completely new pbx system.

With a VOIP system you can add new extensions with a few mouse clicks and add new lines by upgrading your broadband connection to a higher speed.

VOIP Telephony: Requirements

In brief: the more incoming lines that are required the more bandwidth from the Internet Connection will be required; the more extensions in use, the greater the specification for the pbx server.

For example:

1-3 Users

4-24 Users (With the equivalent of 3 incoming lines)

25+ Users

As system complexity increases so does the requirement for extra bandwidth and networking facilities. Dedicated hardware from vendors such as Cisco is also available for large implementations.
